One of the major stumbling blocks for beginning orchidists is that they feel that they must use harsh pesticides to be successful and avoid orchid diseases. The main goal is to grow and produce beautiful orchid plants and flowers for our own personal enjoyment. The purpose of this article is to provide easy alternative methods in treating many of the common orchid diseases including pests of orchids. To be successful with these methods and avoid orchid diseases, it is imperative to use in conjunction with good cultural practices. There are important differences between repotting orchids and any ordinary houseplant. First, repotting orchids require a special medium, or orchid potting mix. A good orchid potting mix consists primarily of chipped bark or tree fern with various additional ingredients such as charcoal, pumice, perlite, or sphagnum moss. Orchid roots are adapted to alternating periods of moisture and dryness so the mix must be free draining. Always buy more than you think you will need for repotting orchids. Some hours prior to repotting orchids, soak the new mix in a bucket of water at room temperature. This will help the orchid roots to establish quickly.
