All orchids’ roots perform 2 essential purposes, and in some orchids, they produce a third one.
- First they secure the flowers wherever they grow. Epiphytic orchids’ roots when attached around the bark of the tree they grow on, or to the clay container they grow in, are just about difficult for you to detach.
- The second function of orchids’ roots would be to deliver the flower with water and dissolved mineral salt. Terrestrial orchids’ roots are rather simple. They originate at the bottom of the stalk, they’re usually tiny, prolonged, fibrous as well as rarely branched. Sometimes, as in Paphiopedilums, they are densely haired (or tomentose) so that they can absorb moisture from the tinniest particles of growing medium.
